Droop Mountain Battlefield Graves

The Droop Mountain Civil War Cemetery s located at Droop Mountain State Park, which is immediately off of US Route 219, north of Lewisburg, West Virginia.

The Battle of Droop Mountain was fought over which faction would have control of the only major road leading through the area. Whoever controlled this road would control the comings and goings of the Greenbrier area.

This sign sits right beside US Route 219, and points the way into the State Park.

To get to the cemetery, one needs only follow the signs for the park office.

The Museum and Graves are located directly behind the park office.

Here is the sign by the path leading to the cemetery.

This sign reads simply "Confederate Graves".

There are several distinct graves marked here. Each marked quite simply with a stone. No markings are visible.

One cannot enter the small graveyard, as it is surrounded by a simple split-rail fence to prevent marauders from entering.

After a bloody battle, these brave men were layed to rest in these simple graves.

Here two stones are visible.

Another stone near the rear of the small graveyard.

All photos were taken wth a zoom setting as you are not allowed to enter inside the fencing.

Across the highway, in a field where the worst of the battle was fought, fly the US flag and the WV state flag.

Here is the site where a Confederate soldier fell during the battle.

His portrait sits atop the marker.

Fairview Christian Church Cemetery

Fairview Christian Church Cemetery is located between Gap Mills and Union, in Monroe County. Off of Route 3 approximately 0.75 miles, on Central Church Road, this cemetery is located on the left hand side of the road, and sits almost on the road in places.

We only got about half of this cemetery cataloged yesterday, as a funeral was to begin shortly. We will go back very soon and get the remainder of the sites.

We were able to catalog the upper most area entirely [at the road] and over half of the central area. We will get back shortly to finish the cataloging.

To set these in a more manageable manner, I will be posting 4 or so graves a day.

Like just before a hurricane... when the only thing that will cool everything off is for Mother Nature to let loose her anger, and wet the air and the earth with those tears of anger and frustration she has...

Well, yeah, that's how hot it is here!!!

And while I can't escape to Key Largo, I have been going to Lake Sherwood as often as I can just to cool off in the clear waters of that mountain lake.

Until the weather cools, this blog will not have any entries to place in it with photos of wnderful Monroe and Greenbrier County cemeteries.

But they ARE coming!

Texichick and I will be heading out with our tombstone hunting gear as soon as the weather cools to a tolerable level.

Cemetery Catalogued

The weather cleared long enough yesterday for the Texichick and I to go to Glace and catalog the Hylton cemetery there. And it gave me a chance to give the Texichick a brief lesson on her great-grandparents, as well as her great-great-grandparents, who are buried there [her father's family].

Tomorrow I will begin putting those photos and catalogue into order and will begin posting them on this blog. So be watching for that!!!

The heat and humidity, however, took their toll on me. So, at least uuntil the worst part of the heat is past, we will probably not be going out again soon! But rather, we will wait for the cooler days of autumn before we get into further cataloging, unless the weather changes drastically! So I ask that you bear with us as we stay inside and stay cool, at least through the worst of this heat!

More Wet Stuff

This afternoon I get the car. But guess what?

More of the wet stuff is being called for!!!

The Texichick is off from work Wednesday and Thursday. I DO have a doctor's appointment on Thursday morning, but it looks promising that one of the two days will be clear enough that we can do a little cemetery spelunking!

Dear old Mountain Daddy and I were talking on Sunday how we would buy back our old homestead if we won the lottery and properly fence and clean up the old family cemetery. [Current owners allow us access to it, but refuse to allow us to fence it or clean up the overgrown trees that have literally grown through graves!] They did allow us to place a marker in the center of the cemetery commemorating my great-great-grandparents who are buried there. [They want the area left alone for the wildlife, as they are big hunters and go for the big game that tramples through the area.]

I would wager a bet that not many people daydream of spending lottery winnings so "elaborately"! [tee-hee]

Waiting For The Deluge To End!

If you've been watching the national news, you will know that we have been having an extremely wet spring and early summer in my neck of the woods!

Couple that with my daughter is using my car to go back and forth to work, while she is saving to purchase her own car, and I am often left without transportation at present. So when the weather does permit graveyard hunting, I am without wheels. And when I do have my car? It is pouring down rain!!!

However, I did want everyone to know that I will be doing my absolute best to get out in the next week and do a hunting!!! Surely the skies will clear during this next week so that I can get at least one small cemetery covered!!!

Please be patient with me, and know that I have not forsaken the Graveyard Rabbit's! I've just been "under the weather", and praying that will all change soon!

Confederate soldiers from the Battle of

Lewisburg, fought May 23, 1862, lie in

the cross-shaped common grave. It

has a vertical length 80 feet long and a

cross arm of 40 feet long, with an

overall width of 10 feet.

Colonel George Crook of the 3rd Ohio

Brigade would not permit the

Southern sympathizers to bury their

own dead, and thus they were

originally laid out in the Old Stone

Church and later placed in a trench

along the south wall of the church

without ceremony. It wasn't until after

the war that the remains of the 95

Confederate dead were removed from the churchyard and interred in this

cross-shaped mass grave.

The bronze marker, which serves as a headstone, was provided by the

Federal Government and erected on November 13, 1956."

Battle of Lewisburg

23 May 1862

The 3rd Provisional Ohio Brigade's

camp was on this hill. The Confederate

artillery opened the battle at 5 a.m.

with a bombardment of the Federal camp.

CONFEDERATE CEMETERY

Remains of 95 unknown Confederate soldiers who fought in

the Battle of Lewisburg on 23 May 1862 lie in this cross-

shaped common grave. It has an upright 80 feet long and

cross arms of 40 feet. After the Civil War the unclaimed

dead were removed from the Lewisburg Cemetery and reburied

in this common grave. The bronze marker which serves as a

headstone was provided by the Federal Government on 13

November 1956.

The Confederate Cemetery is located on McElhenny Road in Lewisburg, Greenbrier County.

This cemetery is a cross-shaped mass grave containing the remains of 95 unknown Confederate soldiers who were killed or mortally wounded during the Battle of Lewisburg - May 23, 1862. The site lies within the position occupied by the Union forces. There are also three separate graves located within the small cemetery.

Sunrise Cemetery is situated approximately 6 miles from White Sulphur Springs on Kates Mountain Road. From Route 60, directly across from the employee entrance to the Greenbrier Hotel turn on Kate's Mountain Road. Cross over the bridge and bear to the right. After about 1 mile the road will turn from paved to dirt. Follow this road approximately another 5 miles. The cemetery sits in a little clearing on the left hand side of the road, in a small clearing. There are only two stones here at this time.

Laura and William had at least seven children: Carl, Forest, Roy, Ida, Ralph, Hazel and Grace.

Elizabeth Tuckwiller was born 8 Nov 1779 in Greenbrier County to John Tuckwiller and Catherine Riffe. She was one of at least 11 children born to the couple.

Samuel and Elizabeth had nine children: Cathy, Joseph, Nancy, Elizabeth, John, Ballard, Rachel, Margaret and Catherine.

Samuel died 19 Jan 1854 at Ft Spring, and was the first person buried in the Mt Vernon Church Cemetery. Elizabeth died 28 Jul 1867 and is buried at his side.

Samuel was the first and founding minister for the Mt Vernon United ME Church at Ft Spring. He was the first person buried in the graveyard there. His grave can be found to the rear of the church in the upper, or "old" cemetery.

She married William George Shepherd [1824-1908] at Ft Springs on 10 Jun 1852. The couple had eight children: Virginia, James, Barbara, Martha, Nancy, Alma, Almirinda, and Ernest.

Catherine died 02 Aug 1902 at Fort Springs.

Jacob Honaker was born in 1783, probably in Monroe County, to Frederick Honaker and Rachel Elizabeth Wiseman. He was one of at least 14 children born to the couple.

He served as a Private in the Virginia Militia during the War of 1812.

He married Anna Sams, also of Monroe County, on 13 Jan 1829. The couple had at least one child, Isaac.

Jacob died in 1838.

John Ray Wiseman was born 26 Jun 1796 in Berks County, Pennsylvania to John Wiseman and Sarah Greene. He was one of at least 12 children born to the couple.

He married Mary Bostick about 1825. It is believed this couple did not have children.

John died 22 Nov 1879 in Monroe County.

Frederick served in the Virginia Militia during the American Revolution.

He married Rachel Elizabeth Wiseman [1769-1856] about 1820-1821. The couple had at least 14 children. He died in 1824.

He married Elizabeth Davis, who was born 26 Aug 1738 in Berks County, Pennsylvania; her parents are currently unknown. The couple married in 1758 in Berks County, PA. They had eleven children.

Isaac served in the American Revolution.

Isaac died 03 May 1818 in Monroe County, [W]VA. Elizabeth died 19 Jun 1807, also in Monroe County, [W]VA.

The Old Rehobeth Church lies on Route 3 just east of Union in Monroe County. The church is the oldest church west of the Alleghany Divide.

Historical marker located on Route 3.

In order to reach the church, you must turn north on the road marked by the above historical marker. The lane leading to the church is approximately 1/4 mile long. It leads to the church and also to the Old Rehobeth Museum.
